Yule Duel – Carolling for a Cause

Not even two months of straight rain could keep Vancouver from getting into the holiday spirit, as thousands packed the streets of Gastown on Dec 1st to hear the very best choirs in the Lower Mainland Carol for a Cause!

Thanks to these fantastic choirs, their supporters, and the Bloom Group sponsors, they were able to raise a total of $55, 229! That’s over $10,000 more than last year! These donations will allow May’s Place to provide over 1,600 days of compassionate end-of-life care to vulnerable people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

St. James Social Service Society Name Change

As of June 2013, the powers that be at St. James Social Services Society have decided after 52 years of service to change the name to “The Bloom Group“.   There is no reason given on their new website.   Some of us who worked at St. James in the old days are feeling sad and confused about this.

Drawing of St. James Social Services in the early days.

St. James Community Service Society kindly shared this great drawing of the old St. James Social Services offices and the Gastown Workshop, drawn by Fritz Jacobsen in 1982.  The original Powell Place was on the second storey above the Gastown Workshop when it opened in 1977.    It relocated in the early 80s.

St. James Social Services and The Gastown Workshop 1982 drawn by Fritz JacobsenI’m told that Fritz Jacobsen was a talented parishioner at St. James Church who also did the first St. James Social Service Sign.
